What you'll do

Overview

This pastel de nata baking class in Lisbon lasts two hours in a boutique studio in Algés, a short hop from Belém. Two native professional chefs teach the whole process, so you see how Portugal's best-known pastry is made rather than simply assembling it.

What you'll make

Your own tray of custard tarts, starting with the puff pastry and finishing with a rich, glossy custard, baked until golden and blistered.

How the session runs

The chefs explain each technique and then let everyone roll, fill and bake their own tarts. While the pastry rests and bakes, you hear how the recipe grew out of the country's monasteries and became a national symbol. The class ends with a tasting of the warm tarts you have just baked. Arrivals more than 20 minutes late cannot be admitted.

Who it's for

Pastry fans and complete beginners in small groups of two to ten, with a minimum age of 8. The recipe relies on traditional ingredients, so it does not suit vegetarians, vegans, coeliacs or people with severe dairy allergies. Solo guests should email the studio before booking.

Private & team bookings

The studio can be booked exclusively for families, friends or corporate teams, seating up to 15 guests or 20 for a standing reception, with a custom proposal on request.
