What you do

In a working wood workshop, a maker shows you how to choose and mark out a hardwood board, cut the shape, round the edges and add a handle or a juice groove. You use hand tools and, under close supervision, some of the workshop's machines, then sand through the grits until the surface is silky smooth. The finishing touch is a coat of food-safe oil that brings out the grain. Safety briefing first, sawdust everywhere after.

What you take home

A hardwood chopping or serving board you made, ready for the kitchen or the cheese course.
