Sit at a potter's wheel, centre a lump of clay and pull up your first bowl or cup.

What you do

A potter shows you how to wedge the clay, centre it on the wheel and open it up, then you try it yourself with your hands on the clay and their eye on your work. Most first timers collapse a pot or two before something stands up, and that is half the fun. Expect wet hands, plenty of laughing and a moment of real concentration when the walls start to rise. You finish by choosing which pieces to keep.

What you take home

One or two pieces you threw yourself. The studio usually trims, glazes and fires them, ready to collect a few weeks later.

Who it suits

Complete beginners, couples and small teams who like a challenge. The number of wheels sets the group size, so bigger teams take over a studio or rotate between the wheel and hand-building.
