What you do

A baker explains what a sourdough starter is and how to keep one alive, then you mix a dough, stretch and fold it, and learn to shape it into a tight, round loaf. Because sourdough takes its time, classes usually work with doughs prepared earlier, so you see every stage: mixing, proving, shaping, scoring and baking. You practise scoring a pattern on the crust and taste fresh bread straight from the oven.

What you take home

A loaf, or a dough to bake at home, a jar of starter and the confidence to keep it going.
