What you'll do

Overview

This azulejo painting workshop in Lisbon takes place in a small atelier in the Graça district, just above Alfama. You paint a single tile by hand in around an hour and collect it, fired, the next day.

What you'll make

Using mineral pigments and real brushes on raw glaze, you decorate your own tile either with a pattern or freestyle. The technique follows the traditional majolica method rather than printed transfers, so each tile is individual. After the session it goes into a high-temperature kiln overnight.

How the session runs

Sessions run daily at 10:30 and 15:00, though some slots close when attendance is low. An artist shows the technique and helps with each stroke. Collect your tile the following day during the opening hours of the shop next door, or ask about hotel delivery for a fee.

Who it's for

Complete beginners, couples, friends and solo travellers. Children under five are not recommended.
